Frequently Asked Questions
Installation
Will Wallums stick to any wall?
Wallums stick to most walls. Smooth surfaces are ideal, but the decals can be installed on most textured walls with some patience. Some walls painted with VOC-free paints aren't compatible with the vinyl, whatever the texture. We recommend ordering a color sample pack ($3, shipping included) so you can check that the vinyl sticks to your wall. We also recommend cleaning your wall using the steps on our installation page for the best adhesion.
How easy is it to install Wallums?
Every Wallums decal comes with easy step-by-step instructions and a free test decal. Some larger decals come in sections that overlap seamlessly to look like one large decal. For large decals, we recommend having a second person help. See our installation videos.
How easy is it to remove Wallums wall decals?
Very easy! Start at one corner and gently peel the decal off the wall at a sharp angle, using smooth, steady force. Decals with lots of lettering or small pieces can take longer. Painter's tape helps speed things up: test it in a hidden spot first to make sure it doesn't lift your paint, then press it onto the edge of the decal and lift. Depending on the age and condition of your walls, a little paint touch-up may occasionally be needed.
How soon should I install my Wallums after I receive them?
The sooner the better. The vinyl lasts for years once installed, but the transfer tape has a shorter life. Install within 3 months; after that we can't guarantee it will transfer properly. Until then, store the decal somewhere cool, dark and dry without big temperature swings. High heat, direct sun or freezing temperatures make failure more likely.
I just painted my wall. Is it OK to apply Wallums?
No. Wait at least 2 weeks. If the paint isn't fully cured, you risk damaging your walls and peeling off paint.
Where can I put my Wallums wall decals?
On just about any hard, smooth surface: glass, mirrors, metal, wood, plastic and more. The vinyl we use is rated for 3+ years outdoors.
Will Wallums damage my walls?
As long as the walls were properly prepped and painted, Wallums shouldn't damage your paint. If you're painting, we suggest priming first. If in doubt, test one of our sample kits in a hidden spot. Wallums can't be held responsible for any damage to walls.
Can I wrap a decal around a corner?
You can, but we suggest cutting the decal where the walls meet, because vinyl wrapped around a corner tends to lift. If you can't cut it, gently warm the vinyl at the corner after installing to make it more pliable. Don't use too much heat, as it can damage the vinyl.
Product questions
What are Wallums wall decals?
Wallums are vinyl wall decals that stick to your wall or other flat surfaces. They're removable, so when you want a change, just peel them off. They're an inexpensive way to transform any room or office.
Can I reuse Wallums if I take them off the wall?
Unless the product description says otherwise, no. The decals keep their stickiness, but they lose their shape and detail when removed. The exceptions are our repositionable printed decals, which use a fabric material with repositionable adhesive, and our removable wallpaper.
How do I know which size to order?
Measure the area where you'll put the decal, decide how much of it you want to fill, and choose the size that fits. Need a custom size? Request a quote.
What do the size dimensions refer to?
Unless noted otherwise, the size is the total size of the whole assembled design. For a design with several lines of text, the size covers the entire design, not each line. If you'd like the sizes of individual pieces, contact us.
Does the example picture show the actual size?
Usually not. We offer many sizes of each design but usually only photograph one. Measure your space to choose the right size.
Will my mural come in one piece?
Our wall fabric comes on 48" rolls. If both of your dimensions are over 48", your mural will come in multiple pieces. If at least one dimension is 48" or less, it will most likely come in one piece unless the length is over 10 feet. For example, a 48" x 96" mural comes in one piece, but a 60" x 144" mural comes in several. Order a few inches extra to allow for crooked walls and ceilings; you can trim the excess with a sharp blade after installing.
How crisp will murals and door murals print?
Murals are meant to be viewed from a distance. Up close you may notice some pixelation or slight blur because the photos are enlarged so much. The larger the mural, the more noticeable this is.
Do Wallums have a gloss or matte finish?
Matte. We use industry-standard Oracal 631 vinyl, which only comes in a matte finish.
Are the colors in your color chart and previewer accurate?
Colors can look different depending on your screen. Some colors, like Gold, Copper, Silver and Key Lime Pie, are especially hard to show on screen. For exact colors, order a color sample pack: pick up to 6 colors for $3, shipping included.
Can wall decals be cleaned?
Yes. Wipe them with a cloth, sponge or paper towel and water. Don't use abrasive or chemical cleaners.
Are wall decals safe for kids?
Decals are a great way to decorate a child's room, but because they're removable, place them out of reach of small children. Don't put decals in or above cribs within reach of stretched-out arms, as small pieces can be a choking hazard.
How are Wallums made?
Every Wallums decal is made to order in-house in Northern California using premium vinyl.
Do you offer a printed catalog?
No. We add new designs regularly, so a printed catalog would quickly go out of date.
Shipping and returns
How quickly will my order ship?
Everything is made to order. We ship on Mondays and Tuesdays, so your order usually leaves our shop within a week, then spends a few days in transit.
Do you offer free shipping?
Yes. Orders over $100 ship free with standard shipping within the continental US.
Where do you ship?
We ship to US addresses only.
What should I do if my decal arrives damaged?
Right away, take photos of the damage and the box, and email them to us with a short description so we can find a solution. Please take the photos before installing. In most cases even a slightly crushed decal installs without problems, especially our printed decals, which use a thicker, more forgiving material.
Can I return a custom wall decal?
No. Custom decals can't be returned because they're made just for you. This includes custom-sized decals and any personalized design.
Can I return a holiday decal?
No, holiday-themed decals can't be returned.
